~ Mychael Black ~
This month we have a sit
down with author Mychael Black.
Born and raised in north Alabama, I am the quintessential Southern
Scorpion guy. I love the outdoors (practically grew up camping), big
dogs (none of those tiny things for me, thanks), fast cars with sexy
curves and big-ass engines, leather, oh, and MEN. Mmm...yeah.
On the professional front, I write gay fiction, primarily erotic.
I'm also an editor for Lady Aibell Press/Chippewa Publishing, I
co-own/edit Erotic Dreams ezine, and am the Associate Fiction Editor
for Forbidden Fruit ezine. In addition, I am one of the folks behind
the scenes at Erotic Romance Writers' Forum.

Thank you for joining Sensual Reads for this interview, Mychael.
Coming off of the release of your latest book, Sword & Sorcery: The
Lost Son, how has life as an author been treating you?
Thank you, J.L. It’s
wonderful. I can’t imagine doing anything else. Even with all the
edits and the legwork, not to mention fighting with the Muse, it’s
my dream job come true.
Tell us a little
about Sword & Sorcery: The Lost Son. What was your inspiration
behind this book?
I’ve always been a
huge fantasy nut, ever since reading Tolkien (The Hobbit and the
LOTR trilogy) at the age of nine. I don’t rightly remember what
exactly sparked the inspiration for Sword & Sorcery, but once
Micheil and Kalen took hold in my brain, they wouldn’t let go.
Of your published
works, which do you hold the dearest? Which title, for a new reader
just exploring Mychael Black, would be the best to start out on?
Oh, Lord. Well, if I
had to pick a favorite, it would be my upcoming short, “Century
Hill, due August 18th from Torquere Press as the Death card in their
new Arcana line.
Your writings are
very genre-fluent. Everything from cowboys to angels to the realms
of fantasy. Do you have a favorite genre that you like to work in?
Close tie between
paranormal and fantasy, actually. I’m a sucker for vamps. Okay, that
was just bad… You get the idea.
*laughs* Though I must admit, coming from the South myself,
country boys hold a special place in my heart.
How would you best
describe Mychael Black as a person?
Hmm… Confident,
kinky, a bit quirky, friendly, dependable, perfectly content to bend
society’s rules and watch ‘em shudder under his weight.
*winks*
Did
you always know that you wanted to be a writer, and if so, did you
know that it would be erotica?
Yes and no. I
originally intended to (eventually) get my PhD in Archaeology, with
a focus in medieval history and warfare. Writing was meant to be a
hobby. Somehow, somewhere along the way, they flip-flopped.
When I started
writing, I wanted to be the next Tolkien (like anyone’s ever
attained that status!), but then I “met” my first gay characters
when they popped up in a story I was writing, and the rest was
history.
What’s next for
Mychael Black? Anything new coming up that you’d like to share?
Lots of things coming
soon… Let’s see… August is a busy month in terms of releases, both
for me and my co-writing with Shayne Carmichael. My 2007 Arcana,
Death: Century Hill, comes out. It’s a bit of a ghost story with a
very bizarre twist. Then there’s The Duke’s Husband, due out on
August 27th from Phaze. Like our (my and Shayne’s) best-selling
romance Kitten, The Duke’s Husband centers on romance more than some
of our other works. Plus there’s a bit of the paranormal in it.
August 29th sees the start of my Chaser series from Torquere,
collectively titled Hearth & Home. The first story, Well-Laid Plans,
takes place a few months after my Single Shot, Going Home.” The
whole series involves the men from “Going Home” – tattoo artist
Robbie Sexton, and his Texan cowboy Seth Ellis.
September 4th, Shayne
and I celebrate the release of Magic & the Pagan, our first novel
with Samhain Publishing. It brings together the realm of Earth, with
our fantasy world of Aurora – complete with a young human pagan and
the Auroran dark fae necromancer who steals his heart.
October we have the
long-awaited sequel to The Power of Two. Dominion is due out October
1st and delves deeper into Griffith St. James’ dark past at the
hands of his former Master.

Full
Release Schedule (as it stands so far.)
What advice do you
have for other aspiring authors of gay erotic fiction wishing to
show their talents to the world?
Number one rule: never
give up. No matter how many rejections you get, never take them
personally. Use them as fuel to make you work all that much harder.
Tell the stories that are in your head; ignore what you think people
want to read.
Where do you hope to see yourself in the next ten years, as both an
author and as Mychael Black, the person?
As an author,
hopefully a Lambda Literary Award winner. Barring that, I’d be happy
to be a household name in the realm of gay fiction – erotic and not.
As a person, I’d like
to have my own office! *laughs*
Someplace where I can close the world out and just write.
Final question, Mychael! If you could be any
one of your characters, which would it be and why?
Oh, God… I have to
pick one? I can’t just jump from one body to another? Hmm… it’s a
tie between Robbie Sexton and Cian Carmichael, my angel from The
Prince’s Angel (a Shayne/Myc novel with Torquere Press).
Robbie because he’s a
country boy, like me, and because he sleeps next to Seth every
night. Cian because he can walk between worlds and gets to make it
with the hottest vampire prince in the world.
*winks*
Mychael, it’s been a pleasure. Thank you again for joining Sensual
Reads in this interview and the best of luck on Sword & Sorcery: The
Lost Son, and all of your terrific reads!
Thanks, J.L.! It’s
been great!
