~ Jennifer Mueller ~

This month we have a sit down with author Jennifer Mueller!

With her love of history, Jennifer Mueller has taken the world of writing to a whole new level. From Rome to France, England to Egypt, even the American West, lovers of romance and history will not be disappointed. I look forward to the June 2006 release of Behind The Mask, where we travel to Italy, 1439.

Jennifer’s site is also very informative. You can find all the information on her works, as well as free reads. Check out the cookbook created from all of her stories. All in all, I find Jennifer Mueller and her story to becoming a writer fascinating. A true talent.

Hi Jennifer and thank you for being with us here at Sensual Reads & Reviews. Could you please tell us more about yourself?

I have a background in forestry, served in the Peace Corps in Kenya, and am now a stay at home mom, at least for a while longer. We just moved in December and we have a 70-year-old house to keep busy with now. If anyone here notices my style and grammar, yes forestry majors don’t have a lot of English classes, thank god for editors.

When did you know that you wanted to be a writer?

Truthfully I didn’t. I was in college when I read a series of books and decide it frankly sucked even though it was a rather long running series. I picked up a pad and pen and started writing. In researching found out the writer of that series seriously messed with facts to fit their own version of history. I had been writing for about 10 years when my husband said you write so much you might as well try to get published. I tried for about two years in print, short stories mostly not much of a market for them there. My first try at epublishing and they took three. I think I’m at 18 or 19 under contract now. I just kind of fell into the published author gig.

What is your inspiration and motivation?

Stories in my head that just have to be told or I spend all day wondering what if with them. Oh yeah and getting a book on a bookstore shelf so my husband can go buy one.

Please describe for us a day in the life of Jennifer Mueller.

Get up well after my husband has left the house, he’s out early I don’t sleep in I swear. Check email and try to keep a 5 year old entertained while hoping to get something written. Once she’s on the bus for Kindergarten its time to seriously write, putter in the garden, run errands which reminds me I need to get that contract in the mail. No seriously. It’s a pretty laid-back life, only real set chore I have is making supper when hubby gets home. Tough I know.

Other than writing, what do you do for fun?

Read, garden, remodel on the cheap, I’m looking forward to enjoying the lake that’s three blocks form us. The new house is near one, I’m from Kansas this 10,000 lakes thing in Minnesota is still kind of new.

Is there a favorite author on your list?

I haven’t been reading a lot lately too busy writing my own stories. But when I do get the bug to read I like C.L. Grace, Agatha Christie, otherwise pretty eclectic. I’ve always been a history buff so most of my shelves are non-fiction.

Do you have a favorite genre to write as well as read?

To read I like historical mystery the most, and anything historical second. That’s what I mainly write the historical part, as far as genre within that though no I don’t get stuck in one spot I have western, mystery, suspense, noir, romance, some sensual/erotic, time travel, and even a few contemporary sneak in.

Any up and coming books you could share with us?

What don’t I have coming. In June I have two History Lessons at Linden Bay Romance, It’s three stories in one but not a collection. When Ayda Rogers is invited to a Scottish Castle to research her doctoral thesis not only does she find her own future changed but gets to hear all about the former loves in the castle as well. As well as Behind the Mask, my first with Venus Press. It’s about a woman left the day after her wedding, to a man she hardly knew. When a masked ball provides anonymity and opportunity Ilaria decides to take a chance at the passion she was denied.

July has Her Father’s Daughter part of Summer Heat 2 at Midnight Showcase, Gwenhyfer lives in Saxon England just as the Norman have conquered the country. She’s just trying to survive and then a wounded Norman lands on her doorstep. Robert d’Urbanville finds not all Saxons are enemies and that Gwenhyfer truly is her father’s daughter.

August brings The Angel of Bally Ferriter. An older school teacher Robert spends his summers traveling and this summer he’s in Ireland learning Gaelic, but when an angel of a barmaid starts getting harassed, they team up to thwart the idiot. Learning Gaelic just got a whole lot more interesting.

That takes us into 2007 with Samburu Hills at Chippewa Publishing. At the turn of the century Celeste is married to the son of an aristocrat only to find she was just part of his attempt at improving his image in the Kenyan colony. When he dies, she’s left to run the ranch alone, a ranch he left no money to keep going. And then there’s Edward. I have another 6 or 7 submitted around too.

How about any advice for the future author?

Don’t listen to your husband if he tries to compare you to Hemingway. No that’s not a joke. But the biggest one I do for myself is to write what I enjoy. I like seeing where the characters go as much as a reader, I never plot that would take the fun out of the discovery. I don’t usually write for a publisher either, after its done and the story has played itself out then I try to find a home for it. I know someone else will say the exact opposite, but it’s worked for me with 19 of them and one of those is a collection with 13 stories in it. That’s me.

How about any quirky writing habits?

Try writing sex scenes with a 5 year old 10 feet away singing every thought in her head and ask me about quirky. Other than that I think I’m pretty vanilla, no big rituals or hang ups.

Do you have any peeves that just drive you crazy?

I know I shouldn’t say this in this business, but it’s the whole pen name thing. If you’re going to use one use it, but when I go out and see you posting it all over that you’re writing as such, and it’s in your signature, I’ll stop now before I get myself in trouble. That’s it though.

Is there any other news or links you would like to share?

My website is Jennifer Mueller there I have links to all my books, excerpts, chat schedules, and all that other stuff we authors seem to accumulate. I have a Jennifer's Group and a Blog as well both with links at the website.

Thank you Jennifer for being with us. I look forward to your future works and chatting more with you in the future.
